Friends, I have had the privilege of getting to know some truly talented authors and illustrators over the last few years. And one of my favorites just released book 2 in her super-cool chapter book series. Teeny Sweeney…what’s not to love about this spunky gal?
Today Teeny’s creator shares with us why she loves writing for emerging readers. Award-winning author Amberly Kristen Clowe is truly one of a kind. I have a feeling you are going to love her as much as I do. (And I really do!)
Enjoy!
5 Reasons Writing for Emerging Readers is Uber-Cool
- Humor
The 7-10 age group like to laugh. These kids want to elbow a friend and say, “You’ve got to read this!” They want to sit in bed with a good book and giggle their eyes to sleep.
2. Growing Up
It is such a privilege to be a part of a kid’s childhood. Seriously. These readers are figuring out their likes and dislikes, whether literary or other. They are comparing the social circles and cues in the stories to what’s happening in their own lives. They are not only being told what’s right, but they’re really beginning to think about and execute it on their own.
3. Trying it Out
This group is writing and drawing what they read. They read a chapter book and want to create a story with chapters. They read a comic strip and begin doodling comics everywhere! These gorgeous works of art always give me all the feels.
4. Here for the Story
When kids are especially younger, they often flip through the pages and focus on the illustrations. It’s often around this new age that kids begin reading on their own and really getting into the twists and turns of the plot. They hang on the edge of their seats at the end of every cliff-hanging chapter! As an author, that’s pretty rad.
5. They Stick Around
Man, have I mentioned how cool it is to write for kids? Yeah, it really is. As a teacher and parent, I’ve seen kids absolutely devour a series they enjoy. As an author, that is such an incredible thought. Whatever it is that they enjoy about the writing, they are there for it. I’m so excited about this idea for the second book in my Teeny Sweeney series.
