Learning something new is always a new adventure. I recently decided to knock one of the items off my bucket list. I decided to learn how to play the harp. Keep in mind, I had never touched a harp. I had never taken a lesson. Sure, I had three years of piano lessons back in junior high, so I wasn’t completely “un-musical.” But when I first sat down and touched the strings, I asked myself silently, “What were you thinking?”
You see, my plate is not just full, it is overflowing. Think Thanksgiving with all of your helpings, from the turkey on down to the pecan pie, all piled on one plate. I imagine you can relate. We pack our lives so full of activities that it is easy to feel like there is no way to keep the gravy from dripping off your plate and running onto the table.
As it turns out, adding this new hobby was actually a good thing. You see, tackling this new instrument was something that I was doing for me. It revives my spirit and calms my frazzled nerves.
“All the lands are at rest and at peace; they break into singing.” Isaiah 14:7
When we allow ourselves to rest, our souls in communion with the One who offers complete rest, amazing things happen. Our burdens are lighter. Our pain is diminished. And the craziness of the world seems a little less overwhelming. And that is quite a blessing.
I had no idea when I felt the nudge to pick up a new skill, that God would use it to give me peace. I am so grateful for this resulting peace.
I wish the same peace and calm for you.
